It's the little things that matter
I often hear when out fishing or doing write ups for social media people saying I am lucky, I am skilled, all those sorts of things. To be brutally honest I am more the first 1 then anything else but it is the little things that my good mate Nolsy and I do that make the big difference in why we are so successful when we head out on the water. Don’t get me wrong we all have days when we don’t catch anything well except laughs with a good mate.

SOS Starting Out Series Pumicestone Rules: Get Knotted! by Mangrove Jack
The next time you pull in your line and there's no hook on the end won't be the first or certainly the last time this happens when fishing. Sure there's some toothy critters in the passage like tailor, mangrove jacks and pike that are more than capable of removing a hook with their teeth, but in general most fish are fairly forgiving on your line and hooks. They are not however forgiving to poorly tied knots especially when dealing with light lines. Pumicstione Rule 4: Tie go

Pumicestone Rules
SOS : Starting Out Series by Mangrove Jack We didn't catch any and I don't know why??!! A common call of the frustrated Pumicestone fisherman. Just the last couple of weeks I've seen the exact posts by some of the Pumicestone Pirates starting out and I get it. You see these magnificent photos of people catching fish in the passage and why not you? Guess what though everyone catches zeros no matter how good you are. Fishing is challenging otherwise as the saying goes it would

Why do we fish? - The search for Nirvana..... by Mangrove Jack
Nirvana is referred to in Buddhism as the ultimate goal. It is the ultimate place to reach or state of being....... and guess what I'm convinced that fishermen and the type of beings we are, are always in search of theirs. My personal fishing nirvanas have certainly changed over the years. That's the great part about fishing and we are so lucky in South East Queensland (in and around the Pumicestone Passage in particular) to have such a diversity of environments to fish in.

Starting Out Series: Reel Em In!!! by Mangrove Jack
I hate to say it but if there's one thing that will let you down trying to land that fish you want it's more than likely going to be your reel or your line. Line dissapearing in behind your reel, loose loops, line dug in to itself, sticky drags, antireverse gone and poorly tied knots. The list goes on and I reckon I've probably done them all. Hopefully I've learnt from my mistakes and that this article may help you in selecting the right fishing reel for the job and caring fo

Starting out series - Rod Selection - By Pumicestone Passage Pirates Writer, Mangrove Jack.
Starting Out Series – Selecting A Rod by Mangrove Jack When can we go fishing again!!!!!!! Is the cry which means you’ve done something right. It’s a great sign that the kids have enjoyed the last trip and want to go again but it’s not as easy as it seems is it? The same applies to newcomers to this piscatorial sport of ours. Hopefully this article and series of blogs will provide a few hints and tips for those either wanting to start a young person in the sport or you’re jus

Trolling the Pumicestone Highway by Mangrove Jack
Trolling the Pumicestone Highway by Mangrove Jack I’m on…..my mate Chris yelled over the motor for about the fifth time that afternoon just as I managed to get it started again. He was on fire this afternoon. Hooked up again to another nice flathead or lizard as they are affectionately known. The little Tilsan Minnow in colour Sunset/Mango was wreaking havoc and my job was to get the net ready…...again. I didn’t mind and just laughed. Great to see a good mate having a ball. I
